Abstract

In shallow foundations the relation between differential settlements due to cyclic and static loading has been a source of several finite elements analyses. These analyses show that cyclic settlements are three times greater than static settlements. Based on a model of accumulation of deformations it is shown that a structure becomes more sensitive to settlements generated by cyclic loading than those generated by static loading. Moreover, this proportion can be higher than three and depends on the amplitude of the applied cyclic loading. A random generation of void ratios is presented for a subsoil on which two footings rest. These footings are loaded with hundred thousands cyclic loads. It is concluded that cyclic settlements depends strongly on the average stress applied. On the contrary, the variation of the average stress amplitude had practically little influence on the cyclic settlements of both footings.
