Concentrations of heavy metals in soils of Talcahuano, Chile

Two sampling campaign of urban soils was carried out in Talcahuano in 1999 to evaluate the As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, V y Zn contents. Soil samples were dried, sieveld and stored. The extract of heavy metals for soil samples were carried out according Aqua Regia procedures and analysed by ICP-AES. Results illustrated that concentration of elements in soil surface (0 – 10 cm) are higher than the concentrations in deeper samples (10 – 20 cm). The average concentrations of Cu, Pb and Zn are upper than the Dutch A values. Some soil samples with high heavy metal concentrations indicate contamination levels.
