Abstract

This article presents a study about the influence of the cohesionless fines content on the dynamic parameters of fine sands. The dynamic shear modulus G max the constrained modulus M max and the damping ratio D are studied. To this purpose, fine sands were tested with different content of quartz powder. A series of 80 resonant column tests were carried out in eight soils with different grain size distributions, measuring in each test the compression wave velocity. Results of the study showed the strong reduction of the dynamic shear modulus G max and the constrained modulus with the increase of the fines content up to 10%. Above the 10% the modulii become constant. Furtbermore, results of this research showed that the damping ratio for sands, with the same shear strain amplitude, reduces with the increase of fines content.
