Abstract

This paper examines the benefits achievable during the design and construction ofa marine terminal if those involved understand the ultimate purpose and operational parameters of the terminal from the very beginning of the project. It provides you with an overview introducing key issues that should be considered before site selection and initial conceptual design are started. This paper also considers the influence marine operations is beginning to have on site selection and design issues, especially with risk mitigation for shipping and the efficiency of the port in general. The process is similar no matter which location is being considered, the only difference being the variance of factors taken into consideration to ensure safety and efficiency remain paramount. One does this by considering operational methods of controlling the passage of vessels within confined waters especially port areas using modern handling methods including the use of tugs, the use of modern navigation and docking aids, effective training and familiarization with vessel types of those handling the vessels as a team, the use of sophisticated integrated simulators, provision of real-time and forecast meteorological and oceanographic information, and overall management of port operations.
