The use of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) in South America has been and still is significant. There have been two or more major and successful projects using TBMs in countries such as Peru and Ecuador but not yet in Chile, where the application of this technology has been until very recently almost non-existent. This article aims to explain those tunnels in South America excavated with TBMs, focusing on recent Chilean TBM projects. The need to implement more quickly current and future projects with underground construction elements in the Chilean mining, electrical generating industries together with underground transport schemes, dictate a need for continuing adoption of this technology for the construction of tunnels.
