Contaminated soil as structural fill in the new local port of Stigsnaes

Abstract

This paper analyzes the possibility of using contaminated soil as filling material. In addition, the important variables are described and subsequently, the technical requirement concerning contaminated soil in the Danish legislation are assessed.A cost analysis is carried out assuming two filling material, first clean sand and second polluted soil. In addition, two different sheet pile walls, namely, single and double wall, are included in the analysis. The results show that the best alternative considers a double sheet pile wall and polluted soil as infill. It is also recommended to carry out a complete environmental analysis in order to fulfil the ‘reduced’ requirement for the membrane system according to Danish legislation.
