Abstract

Based on the authors’ own experiences, this article addresses the use of industrial and non-industrial process waste in roadworks, with an emphasis on its application on low-traffic roads. Several case studies are presented on the improvement of subgrade soils, stabilization, and cover layers, using various waste materials, such as blast furnace slag, spent catalysts, crushed chin straps, lignin, among others. The article highlights the importance of conducting appropriate measurements and testing to evaluate the compatibility and effectiveness of materials. It also emphasizes the need to consider environmental and logistical factors when using waste. Finally, it emphasizes that this alternative can be a viable and sustainable solution, especially if local resources are optimized and transportation distances are minimized.
