Abstract

This paper presents the interpretation carried out for the results obtained in four dilatometer tests DMT and three cone penetration tests CPTu carried out in residual soils located in the central zone of Chile. The interpretation was carried out to estimate the residual undrained shear strength ratio (Su/σ’v0) through triaxial tests, and existing correlations in the literature for DMT and CPTu. Due to uncertainty in the estimation of the at rest lateral earth pressure coefficient (K0), which is necessary to estimate the Su/σ’v0 in triaxial tests, the capacity of the DMT to estimate this parameter was evaluated. It is concluded that DMT, complemented with CPTu, allows a good estimation of the K0 parameter and, in this way, the determination of the residual undrained shear strength ratio through triaxial test. However, caution should be taken since both in situ tests have limitations in their correlations when estimating the undrained residual shear strength.
